» Critical industries to get toolboxes

The Australian Flexible Learning Framework has awarded over $1 million dollars for the development of six new Flexible Learning Toolboxes in critical industries. The Series 12 toolboxes will be developed by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) in consultation with Industry Skills Councils and Industry Training Advisory Boards in forestry, retail, community services, electrotechnology, plumbing, and spatial information services industries.


» Over 145 projects for innovation in 2009

The Australian Flexible Learning Framework has provided $5.3 million nationwide for e-learning innovation in 2009. During this year, the focus will be on supporting business-training provider partnerships working to integrate e-learning in a business context. There will be provision for learners with greater choice, increasing RPL (recognition of prior learner), and a focus on disadvantaged learners. Funding is allocated to states and territories.


» New TVET resources

TVET Australia has a new suite of customised BSB07 Assessment Tools that are available in electronic version as a download. The unit packs includes an Assessor Guide, an Assessment Project along with a Knowledge Test (Examination) and have been written for Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels.


» Global Financial Crisis (GFC) assessed

Service Skills Australia has released a paper on the GFC which stresses the need for industry and policy makers to continue the commitment towards the development of the workforce for service industries. Skilled workers are still required, and customer service is as always pivotal to the success of a business. There is a list of examples of growth still continuing in retail, hospitality, and tourism.

Prisoners at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) have been involved in a range of employment and vocational education programs, such as cleaning, kitchen, laundry and horticultural duties. Approximately 85% of the AMC's prisoners are currently engaged in employment programs run by VET provider, Auswide Projects.


» e-learning supports employability skills

A new report has highlighted e-learning as an influence in shaping the vocational education and training (VET) system in the 21st century, as organisations seek to incorporate employability skills in their education and training. These skills include communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self management, learning, and technology. It examines three case studies of how this training was done effectively in 3 settings- Skills Tech Australia (QLD), the Electronics and Computer Systems Engineering Program (SA), and the NSW Adult Migrant Education Service (AMES).
